Palo Duro Canyon State Park Canyon, TX

Texas
Location: South of Amarillo off I-27. At the end of TX 217 about 8 miles east of I-27 (12 miles east of Canyon).
GPS Coordinates: 34.97534N, 101.6759W
Our Site Number: Mesquite Campground #89
Reason Selected:Howard & Linda (RV-Dreams) had ranked 8
Price & Discounts: $28 a night PLUS a $4 park entry fee per day per person which amounted to $34 per night
Rank: 8 (out of ten)
Setting: Three campgrounds on the floor of a deep canyon. Each campground is slightly different, but mostly the sites are open and tucked in between mesquite trees and junipers. Good views of the canyon walls from all sites. The campground roads are paved, but the pads are gravel. Other than a couple power lines, nothing to impair the sight lines and only the noise of the wind, birds, and park traffic can be heard.
Big Rig Friendly: There is a windy one-mile 10% grade driving down into the canyon. Caution is required for big rigs around the sharp turns. But with patience and remaining in the lowest gear going down, there should be no problem. The Sagebrush Campground is big rig friendly and closer to the entrance of the park. The Hackberry Campground is for smaller rigs. The Mesquite Campground is at the end of the park road and has good views, but you have to make several low crossings that can be flooded at times. When dry, there shouldn’t be an issue, but you might drag going through the crossings if you are very long. Still, there are plenty of larger rigs found in the campgrounds.
Hook-ups: Water and 50/30 amp electric in Sagebrush & Mesquite Campgrounds. Water and 30 amp electric in Hackberry. Each campground has a bathhouse with flush toilets and showers. And each campground has a dump station.
Laundry: None.
Other Factors: Rooftop satellite is no problem in the two larger campgrounds. The bathhouse was clean, but a little smelly. Our cell phones work just fine with our amplifier.
OVERALL RATING: 8 (out of ten)
